PLAY SUMMARY:
While the play, Waiting On The Sun, deals with mature and serious issues, inserted throughout, as in life, there is a great deal of comic relief. The play chronicles one night in the life of Justin, a bright, musically-inclined college student who is afflicted with Becker Muscular Dystrophy. The disease has left with him very little mobility in his arms or his legs. He is confined to a motorized wheelchair.
Justin's wacky, wanna-be-rapper roommate has decided to treat him to something special for his birthday: a night with an exotic dancer/escort. Arriving under false pretenses, Justin is led to believe she is a fellow college student who needs help with music choices for a dance audition. He soon finds out, however, that the entire evening is a set up; then the fireworks begin.
Tiffany, hired by Zack to spend the night with Justin, has her own issues. It's her first experience as an escort. Her fears are compounded by the fact that she has a genuine wheelchair phobia.
As the play progresses, Justin and Tiffany discover that they share many unexpected commonalities. The play seeks to strip away (no pun intended) societal conventions vis-a-vis perceptions of disabled individuals. At the same time, the play serves to educate and entertain. A tear and a laugh are never far at any given point during the stunningly-portrayed and deeply-moving performance.
The title of the play was inspired by a song by singer/songwriter and Connecticut resident, Doug Wahlberg. His music is woven throughout the play.
